Lawn Care: Having pride in your lawn

A well maintained lawn is a reflection of you, isn’t it? Most of us look at our houses and cars as extensions of ourselves, but when it comes to lawns, the labor outweighs the fruits of the labor, so to speak, and we let it fall to neglect.  The end result is a shoddy, overgrown lawn, which is a home for weeds and insects.

Walking to your front door means walking past your lawn, which is a constant reminder of carelessness.  If you cringe every time you pass it, you ought to remember that your visitors also have to walk across the pathway to reach your front door, and if the pathway is hurdled by weeds and a badly maintained lawn, it immediately gives an impression of carelessness. Thus, your lawn is either an eye catching landscape or a nasty bunch of weeds in the neighborhood.  

You know that it wasn’t always like this.  There was a time when you really took care of your lawn – you watered and watered it, but it adamantly refused to cooperate.  You added fertilizers and minerals, but that didn’t help. You even diligently used your lawn mower to give it a well maintained appearance. Some how that too didn’t work! No one warned you that lawn maintenance could be so problematic, and slowly your enthusiasm wanes and you let it grow as it pleases; that’s exactly what your neglected lawn does – over grows and chokes with weeds, and though you are not watering it regularly now, it still grows and grows.

Somewhere along the way you gave up.  But instead of admitting your defeat, you have a bunch of excuses including, “I don’t have a green thumb”, “my neighbor has all the time in the world to fuss over his lawn. I don’t! I have to work for a living.” , and “Once the rains start, my lawn will automatically start perking up.”  But you know that these are excuses.  You want your lawn to be the best it can be and the talk of the block.
